The art of Capoeira was born 400 years ago in the sugar cane and coffee fields of Brazil. Enslaved Africans and Brazilians banded together to fight against their Portuguese slave masters.

They cleverly disguised their martial arts training with in the framework of African dance and song. While it looked like the slaves were having a celebration they were really training for their liberation.

Capoeira emphasizes creative self- expression, improvisation, and a physical dialog between participants. Classes begin with stretching and flexibility exercises and then proceed to focus on the various movements that, in combination, make the art so unique.

The Roda is a circle where the game of capoeira is played. Two people spontaneously interlocking movements in a breathtaking display, while the rest of the capoeiristas sing, clap, and play instruments.

It is the circle where your fears are faced, your body is pushed beyond perceived boundaries, and your spirit is elevated. This is CAPOEIRA!
